Roche Diagnostics – MEP

The new Roche Learning Center in Indianapolis has been designed to closely follow European energy performance and thermal comfort standards. Although the building appears to be transparent, it achieves a wall-to-window ratio of less than 60 percent. The curtain wall system is designed with a low-e coated, Argon-filled-cavity unitized system. Overhangs control solar gain, as do dynamic external venetian blinds controlled by local photocells that track sun position relative to elevation.

Vertical sawtooth skylights bring daylight deep into the center of the nave-like building. Fully dimmable LEDs maximize energy savings, achieving overall lighting power density (LPD) reductions of 48 percent from an ASHRAE 90.1-2007 baseline. The ceiling's radiant heating and cooling panels decouple the sensible and latent loads, while the ventilation system is based on underfloor air delivery, allowing for exceptional environmental comfort. Overall savings are estimated to be in the region of 70 percent.
