A modern center for world-class healthcare

A curved glass facade gives this women’s hospital a generous and expansive appearance, and its syncopated composition of vertical elements reflects the diverse functions housed within. The facility consolidates women’s services—providing healthcare to expectant mothers through the creation of spaces for diagnostic and treatment services, labor and delivery, ante- and postpartum care, C-section operating rooms, 102 replacement beds, and a nursery for 60 newborns.

The focal point of a revitalized campus

The 300,000-square-foot tower, located on the 48-acre Northwell Health (formerly North Shore LIJ) campus, is the centerpiece for the revitalization of the larger campus. The building’s geometry is based on the vesica piscis, an ancient fertility symbol with overlapping circles. This creates two convex surfaces—one facing the facility’s entrance, the other facing its main tower. Inside, the curved design helps mitigate the endless corridors so common in medical buildings. The building infrastructure and all building systems also allow for future vertical expansion of two additional stories as medical care changes over time, and will have the capacity to accommodate up to 30 medical or surgical beds each.

Taking cues from home and hospitality

To bring an added level of comfort, the interior is modeled after residential and hotel design to improve care for both patients and their families. Single-occupancy birthing suites allow for overnight stays for new fathers, while large lounges provide space for additional family members. Almost all patient rooms have views of a neighboring meadow.
