Joseph H. Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden

SOM's Gordon Bunshaft designed the massive cylindrical form of the Hirshhorn Museum specifically for the exhibition, study, and storage of Joseph Hirshhorn's art collection, one of the major modern painting and sculpture collections in the United States. The museum, which is part of the Smithsonian Institution, is located beside the National Mall.

Measuring 231 feet in diameter, the museum is supported on four massive sculptural columns that rise 14 feet above a plaza. The design allows visitors to pass under the circular form and extends the visual experience to nearby buildings. In the glass-enclosed lobby, escalators and elevators ascend to two floors of galleries housing the permanent collection, and descend to gallery space for changing exhibitions, a 280-seat auditorium, a museum shop, conservation laboratories, workshops, sculpture storage, and other service areas. The top floor houses administrative offices, paintings storage, and research facilities.
