DIFFA Dining by Design Pavilion 11

Each year, the organization Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) calls on major designers to create dining installations for fundraising events. For years, SOM has participated in the initiative by conceiving not just tables, but total dining environments. DIFFA is an opportunity for the firm to not only participate in a good cause, but also to explore unconventional design and fabrication processes. In this way, the program serves as an annual laboratory for innovation.

Our most recent dining pavilion is a study in contrast. Departing from a pure geometric form — the cube — SOM’s design evokes balancing and powerful contrasts, with the exterior shell creating an intimate setting of a room within a room. The geometric austerity and matte surface of the “skin” sets in relief the dazzling, rich, and reflective inner core, presented in a duo-chromatic composition of black and copper.
