SOM

Boutique Hotel Brand

SOM helped a leading boutique hotel refine its brand, finding an architectural vocabulary appropriate for a new class of affluent travelers and suitable for both urban and resort contexts. The overall concept features terraced spaces with natural materials and open layouts that encourage social interactions.

For a New York location, SOM organized the space vertically, using subtle material changes to delineate various programmatic elements. An inviting atmosphere is established in the lobby through travertine floors, limestone walls, and rosewood ceilings, and continues upstairs with warm tones in the guest rooms. The entrance facade features lush planters that complement revolving glass doors.

For an existing Art Deco hotel in Miami, SOM transformed a jumble of dark, disconnected rooms into a series of horizontally ordered spaces. The lobby contains a progression of interlocking public areas, with ceiling planes organized along a diagonal axis. In each guest room, large louvers between the bathroom and bedroom can be opened to create a single space. The design calls for light-colored materials and expansive views, strengthening the link between inside and out.
