On Friday, April 28th, SOM Structural and Civil Engineering Partner William F. Baker will speak at the 14th Annual Sidney A. Guralnick Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship Awards Luncheon at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago. Presenting a lecture titled "The Design of Structures," Baker will explore the ideas and inspiration behind some of SOM's best-known buildings, and the structural systems that are integral to their design. A renowned structural engineer, Baker pioneered the buttressed core system used in the Burj Khalifa.
Baker plays an active role at IIT, where he lectures regularly at the College of Architecture. In 2015, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the institution. Over the course of his career, Baker has also served in multiple advisory roles to the students and faculty of IIT, guiding research and teaching that advances the fields of architecture and engineering.
