On Wednesday, October 25th, William F. Baker, SOM Structural and Civil Engineering Partner, and Mark Sarkisian, SOM Structural and Seismic Engineering Partner, will speak at the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Their presentation, titled "The Engineering of Architecture" is part of the 2017 Dean's Lecture Series. Baker and Sarkisian will discuss the design philosophies behind SOM's work, as well as current projects and emerging ideas within structural engineering. The lecture coincides with "SOM: Engineering x [Art + Architecture]," a pop-up exhibition presented by Mana Contemporary Chicago in partnership with the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial.
Baker and Sarkisian play active roles in the College of Architecture at IIT. Both have held advisory roles at the university, and have lectured about the importance of a strong connection between engineering and architectural design. Baker was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by IIT in 2015 and currently serves as a member of the Board of Overseers for the College of Architecture.
