University Center Featured in Venice Biennale Exhibition

In “The School of Athens,” an exhibition at the 2018 Venice Biennale of Architecture, The New School’s University Center will be featured as a showcase school. The University Center was selected as one of 52 examples of higher learning throughout history, from Plato’s Academy to contemporary university designs.

The exhibition, on view in the national pavilion of Greece, will explore the architecture of academic commons and trace the evolution of intellectual hubs. Said the curators, “Our ambition is to both look back, and to scan across the current landscape of university architecture, to extract compelling and successful spaces that are ‘free’—democratic, unprogrammed, and common.”

Located in Manhattan, the University Center functions as the heart of The New School. The LEED® Gold building provides 200,000 square feet of academic space on the first seven floors and 150,000 square feet of residential dorms on the levels above.
