SOM’s University Center at The New School has been awarded an AIA New York Chapter Merit Award for Architecture. The bold urban landmark, located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 14th Street in Manhattan, broadcasts the experimental nature of the school and creates a dialogue between the campus community, the local neighborhood, and the city.
Awarded annually, the AIA New York Design Awards celebrate exceptional architecture designed by Chapter members or New York City-based architects. Projects located in New York City and designed by architects around the world are also eligible. According to the awards brief, the purpose of the program is to “honor the architects, clients, and consultants who work together to achieve design excellence.”
The University Center and other winners will be showcased in a special exhibition at the Center for Architecture in New York City from April 23 to June 20, 2015.
