On August 5th, 2016, Engineering News-Record (ENR) honored two SOM projects in its 2016 Regional Best Projects Awards. The Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability at Sandy Ground and the U.S. Air Force Academy Center for Character and Leadership Development were recognized among the best design and construction projects throughout the United States.
The Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability at Sandy Ground earned the Best Green Project Award in the New York region. As the first net-zero-energy school in New York State, and one of the first of its kind in the Northeast, the Kathleen Grimm School serves as a model for future schools and helps to achieve the city's goal to significantly reduce global warming emissions. SOM’s design envisions a 50% reduction in energy use over a standard New York City public school.
In the Mountain States region, the U.S. Air Force Academy Center for Character and Leadership Development (CCLD) received an Award of Merit in the Higher Education/Research category. The LEED® Gold certified building is an exemplar of sustainable design, with integrated building systems that influence all aspects of the project's design, construction, and operation.
