On March 2nd, 2017, the first annual Italian Design Day was celebrated in cities around the world. Established in 2016 by the Italian government, the event celebrates the best of Italian design and its far-reaching global influence. To mark the occasion, SOM's Chicago office opened its doors to host a public event in partnership with the Consulate General of Italy in Chicago, the Italian Cultural Institute, and the Italian American Chamber of Commerce.
The event included presentations on Italian design by Eric Keune, SOM Design Director; Cheryl Durst, former Vice President & CEO, International Interior Design Association (IIDA); and Fiorella Villa, Global Communications Director, B&B Italia. Presentations centered on the influence of Italian design in American culture and the nation's continued role in shaping contemporary American design. The event included a sampling of Italian food and wine.
