On Saturday, September 26th, 2015, staff from SOM’s Washington, D.C. office joined with hundreds of other volunteers from the local design and construction industry to turn a vacant lot into a home for the East Capitol Urban Farm in Ward 7. In what will be D.C.'s largest-scale urban farm, the project will serve as a community asset in an area with high poverty and unemployment rates. It was organized by the D.C. Building Industry Association (DCBIA) as its Annual Community Improvement Day.
For the last 23 years, the DCBIA has organized volunteers to design and organize the renovation of recreational parks and facilities around the city. SOM and its D.C. office are longtime sponsors and volunteers for this yearly event. Nine staff members representing different levels of the firm took part this year, clearing brush, building raise planting beds, and planting fruit trees and bushes.
