On Thursday June 9th, an SOM team competed in the 2016 Iron Designer Challenge, a fundraising event for the Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction in New York City to support its design program. Taking place on the school's roof deck, the event saw architectural and engineering professionals teaming up with UASDC students to construct life-size structures using everyday materials.
The SOM team included Matthew Streeter, Maja Paklar, Marti Gottsch, Nathan Strieter, Unmukt Bhatnagar, Luca Lupi, Miguel Brochado, and Jeff Gillway. Responding to this year's theme "Carnival Clash," they based their design on a three-ring circus, in which three events take place simultaneously. Four students worked with the team to build the structure within the allotted time of three hours. The three-ring concept informed the tent's support structure and overall rotational form, as well as the games performed within.
