SOM Receives Top AIA Honors for Regional + Urban Design
Washington, D.C.: The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has just announced the recipients of the distinguished Institute Honor Awards, recognizing excellence and distinction in architecture, urban architecture, and interior architecture. From over 700 total submissions, SOM was awarded 3 of the 8 winning projects in the Regional & Urban Design Category for San Francisco’s Parkmerced Vision Plan, Great Lakes Vision Plan, and Nanhu New Country Village Master Plan.
SOM’s three winning projects share pioneering revitalization efforts that define new standards of environmental sustainability and livability. While the projects range from across North America and China, the commitment to ecologically integrated design and planning anchors all three projects to SOM’s ethos of innovative and sustainable development strategies.
The Great Lakes Century is SOM City Design’s four-year pro bono initiative to catalyze bi-national collaboration on a holistic 100-year vision for the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River basin, which holds 84 percent of North America’s surface fresh water and 20 percent of the earth’s fresh water.
The Parkmerced Vision Plan, located in San Francisco, transforms a 1950s-era, car-centric neighborhood into a holistic urban ecology--a pedestrian-focused community that establishes a productive network of open space, applies evolving environmental technologies to reduce energy and water usage, and resolves automobile dependency by realigning public transit.
Nanhu New Country Village Master Plan is an innovative response to China’s rapid urbanization and diminishing agricultural landscape. A first of its kind in scale and goals, the project sets a new standard in modern, ecological and agricultural village living, and serves as a model for future development throughout China.
