On March 3rd and 4th, several representatives from SOM’s New York office will participate in the New York Build 2020 Expo. Held at the Javits Center in Manhattan, the two-day event will feature panel discussions, workshops, and other sessions focused on contemporary issues in the construction industry.
On Tuesday, March 3rd, Director of Structural Engineering Preetam Biswas will present “Creating Land: Converting Challenges into Opportunities.” Design Director Yasemin Kologlu will lead a presentation titled “From Energy to Carbon: Shifting the Conversation on Sustainability in Architecture.” Senior architect Emirjeta Taipi will participate in the panel “The Only Way is Up – New York as a High-Rise City.”
On Wednesday, March 4th, Managing Partner Ken Lewis will deliver the chairperson’s opening remarks as part of the Residential and Future Construction Summit. He will also give a presentation titled “The Cities Within the City: Transformative Projects in the New Millennium.” Associate Director Frank Mahan will moderate the panel discussion “Combating the Affordable Housing Crisis – Meeting Government Targets.” Associate Director Neil Katz and senior designer Ruben Cabanillas Ramos will present “Designing with Climate Data: Comfort, Performance and Metrics.” Managing Director Julia Murphy will speak on the “Women in Construction” panel.
As Diversity in Construction Ambassadors, Associate Director Rowan Georges, project manager Danei Cesario, senior architectural designer Ellen Abraham, and architectural designer Trey Thomas will participate in a panel discussion exploring the challenges that minorities and members of the LGBTQ+ community face in construction. Additionally, Georges, Cesario, Abraham, and Thomas will co-host the subsequent networking session. The Diversity in Construction initiative was created by New York Build to drive equality and diversity in construction-related fields.
Kologlu and Abraham will also be featured in the “Humans of Construction” exhibition, a photo gallery of the most influential and inspiring professionals working in New York’s built environment.
