From June 6-8, 2017, SOM Managing Partner Kenneth A. Lewis spoke as a guest lecturer at multiple venues in Italy. His lectures were entitled "The Didacticism of SOM's Integrated Practice" and “Dialogues between Structure and Architecture: The Legacy of SOM.” In Milan, Lewis addressed students, faculty, and fellow architects at both the Polytechnic University of Milan and the 7th International Tall Buildings Conference. In Venice, Lewis addressed the Department of Architecture, Construction, and Conservation at Iuav University.
In his presentations, Lewis discussed the structure of tall buildings with particular focus on the diagrid system, a solution that reflects the synthesis of architecture and structure and allows for the greatest possible transparency and optimization of spaces. Additionally, Lewis, who joined SOM in 1986 and is based in our New York office, shared insight on the firm's integrated approach to design. SOM's highly integrated practice allows for a dynamic interplay between architecture and engineering, each bolstering the impact of the other.
