The New York City Council’s Committee on Environmental Protection recently invited SOM and other leaders from the design, environmental, and business spheres to give expert testimonials at a special hearing on site-sourced and stored renewable energy.
Scott Duncan, SOM Director, spoke about the Pertamina Energy Tower, an SOM-designed net-zero skyscraper slated to rise in Jakarta, Indonesia. The committee sought SOM’s expertise on how a net-zero supertall could potentially be replicated in New York City and reviewed a concept study developed by a team led by SOM Sustainability Director Luke Leung.
Other presenters at the February 27, 2015, hearing included experts from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and renewable energy companies. Each representative was called upon to share their insight into sustainable strategies that could support New York City’s dramatic greenhouse gas reduction goals.
