Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has revealed renderings for its design of the new Cheryl and Philip Milstein Teaching and Learning Center at Barnard College in New York. The firm was first tapped to execute the design in 2014. The forthcoming 128,000-square-foot academic hub will accommodate an advanced library concept that promotes engagement as well as a connection to the Lawn. It is slated for completion in August 2018.
The SOM design will double the size of the existing structure with a five-floor base topped with a six-floor tower. The ground floor will include digital commons framing new office and conference spaces as well as a computational science center. Lounge areas will be installed across several outdoor terraces, while the library will offer abundant private spaces for study.
