On August 29, 2015, a team of SOM Chicago employees spent their Saturday as Habitat for Humanity volunteers. They joined in the effort to build homes in the West Pullman neighborhood on Chicago’s far South Side.
Wearing in-house-designed T-shirts in the signature SOM red, the group of 21 staff—representing every level and discipline of the firm—broke into three working groups. One team installed new siding on a house; another completed a fence between two houses under construction; and the third worked on a garage, finishing the framing, setting in gables and headers, and installing trusses.
The hard work and learning experiences of hands-on construction made for a rewarding day of community building for SOM Chicago. The office has participated in several events organized by Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for families in need, and recently won the Chicago chapter's Corporate Partner in Hope award.
