On Thursday, August 16th, SOM and the MAK Center for Art and Architecture will host a panel discussion titled "Art + Engineering + Architecture." Presented in conjunction with the exhibition "Poetic Structure: Art + Engineering + Architecture," the event will take place in the courtyard of the MAK Center's Schindler House. Panelists will discuss historical and contemporary positions regarding the interconnected qualities of architecture, engineering, and the visual arts.
Mark Sarkisian, SOM Partner, and José Luis Palacios, SOM Design Director, will speak on the panel together with: Sharon Johnston, founder and partner of Johnston Marklee; Marc Pally, curator, Art in the Public Realm; and Heather Roberge, chair of UCLA's Department of Architecture and Urban Design. Brett Steele, dean of UCLA's School of the Arts and Architecture, will moderate the panel.
On view through September 2nd, the "Poetic Structure" exhibition illustrates SOM’s interdisciplinary practice, past and present, and the way design and engineering can be integrated to achieve works of public art. Throughout the Schindler House and gardens, the components of the curated exhibit illustrate the crossover in the three disciplines. The exhibition includes a series of art installations and digital projections that spotlight SOM's collaborative work with artists including Janet Echelman at The Jeremy Hotel and Jaume Plensa at Burj Khalifa.
The panel discussion is free and open to the public. Following the event, guests in attendance will have access to the full exhibition.
