As part of the 2015 American Institute of Architects’ Academy of Architecture for Justice (AIA AAJ) Fall Conference, SOM will present the firm's San Bernardino Justice Center on Friday, November 20th, 2015. Earlier this year, the project received a Justice Facilities Review Award Citation, which is the AIA AAJ's highest honor.
Designed by SOM, the San Bernardino Justice Center has been honored by the American Institute of Architects’ Academy of Architecture for Justice. The jury recognized the building for demonstrating quality of form, functionality, and architectural response to complex justice design issues.
The San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has announced the SOM-designed San Bernardino Justice Center and Beijing Tianqiao Performing Arts District Master Plan as honorees of its annual Design Awards program. The projects earned a Citation Award in Architecture and Special Recognition in Urban Design, respectively.
The Architectural Engineering Institute has recognized three SOM projects as part of its Professional Project Award program, which acknowledges and showcases outstanding achievements in design and construction within the architectural engineering field. Terminal 2 at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, China Merchants Tower & Woods Park, and San Bernardino Justice Center received awards.
The ASHRAE Illinois Chapter has awarded the San Bernardino Justice Center with its 2014 Excellence in Engineering Award. The honor recognizes projects that achieve optimal performance due to exemplary MEP systems design.
Three SOM projects have been selected as winners in the annual Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards, organized by the National Council of Structural Engineers Association. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Terminal 2, the Denver Union Station Train Hall, and the San Bernardino Justice Center were each recognized in separate categories, which were defined by overall project budget.
SOM’s newly constructed San Bernardino Justice Center won the 2014 Award of Merit from the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California (SEAONC). The awarded projects and their recipients serve as models of excellence in structural engineering.
The newly completed center establishes a new direction for court facilities in California and is sustainably designed to meet the needs of the county for future generations. The complex is the largest project undertaken by the Administrative Office of the Courts in its court modernization program.
In its March 2014 issue, dubbed "The Big Issue," Architectural Record magazine showcases large-scale buildings around the globe. Four SOM projects are featured, from the super-green Pearl River Tower in Guangzhou, China, to the striking new Terminal 2 in Mumbai.
The American Institute of Architects has elevated Steve Sobel and Michael Duncan to its College of Fellows, a prestigious honor awarded to members who have made significant contributions to the profession. Sobel and Duncan are both directors in SOM's San Francisco office.
