SOM's Jin Mao Tower was honored with the inaugural Hudec Architectural Culture Award on October 27th, 2018. The tallest building in China at the time of its completion, Jin Mao's design echoes the form of the ancient Chinese pagoda and remains a leading model of skyscraper design in the country.
In July, 2017, SOM's Shanghai office hosted a group of visiting architects as part of an exchange program organized by the Japan Institute of Architects and AIA Shanghai. SOM's Silas Chiow led participants on a tour of three projects designed by the firm.

SOM leadership converged in Shanghai for the Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat 9th World Congress. The event, titled “Asia Ascending: The Age of the Sustainable Skyscraper City,” took place from September 19 - 21 at the SOM-designed Jin Mao Tower.
At 2 o’clock on May 31st, 2007, a Westerner in a Spiderman costume arrived at the Jin Mao Tower attracting the attention of nearly one thousand people that quickly gathered. To everyone’s astonishment, he began to climb the tower without the assistance of people or equipment.
