On July 17th, 2017, a group from SOM's Los Angeles office took part in a site visit to Pen Factory in Santa Monica, California. The sustainable, adaptive reuse project is transforming a long-abandoned assembly line manufacturing facility into a multi-tenant creative workplace.
José Luis Palacios, Design Director for SOM's Los Angeles office, will give a presentation to the Society of Iranian Architects and Planners about the design of the New United States Courthouse in Los Angeles. The event takes place on November 3rd, 2016, in Santa Monica, California.
On October 11th, 2016, members of SOM's Los Angeles office will attend the Facade Tectonics 2016 World Congress. They will present the integrated curtain wall design for the New United States Courthouse, a high-performance facade that significantly reduces solar thermal gain.
In December, the Bakersfield City Council voted unanimously to hire SOM to develop the Downtown Bakersfield High-Speed Rail Station Area Plan. Part of the California High-Speed Rail System, the project will develop a vision for the downtown area around the proposed station site.
At the 2015 Los Angeles Architectural Awards on June 18, 2015, the Los Angeles Business Council announced that the SOM-designed New United States Courthouse – Los Angeles won an Under Construction Award. SOM's design for the facility optimizes workflow and promotes efficient operations and maintenance.
