AIA has announced the 2018 recipients of the Institute Honor Awards, which recognize excellence and distinction in architecture, urban design, and interior architecture. Two SOM projects were honored: the new United States Courthouse in Los Angeles and the Chinatown Branch of the Chicago Public Library.
Three SOM projects—the United States Courthouse in Los Angeles, India Basin in San Francisco, and San Diego Central Courthouse—were honored in the 2017 Architect's Newspaper Best of Design Awards. The fifth annual awards program highlighted projects in 42 categories.
The new SOM-designed courthouse in downtown Los Angeles was honored at the Sustainable Innovation Awards, hosted by the United States Green Building Council's Los Angeles chapter. The courthouse was awarded in the Energy and Atmosphere category.

In its November 2017 issue, Architect Magazine names SOM the number one architectural firm on its Architect 50 list. SOM is the only practice to receive top overall ranking two times since the magazine founded the prestigious list in 2009.
Four SOM projects were honored in the 2017 AIA California Council Design Awards. The United States Courthouse in Los Angeles; the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility Master Plan; India Basin; and the University of California Merced's 2020 Campus Development plan all received awards.
Two SOM-designed projects in Los Angeles—the new United States Courthouse and Sunset | La Cienega Residences—received three honors in the 2017 AIA|LA Design Awards. This year's winners were announced at a ceremony on October 30th.
The Desmond received an Excellence in Structural Engineering Award from the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations. A renovation and adaptive reuse project in downtown Los Angeles, the project was recognized in the Forensic/Renovation/Retrofit/Rehabilitation Structures category.
Curbed provides a status update on the Olympia project in downtown Los Angeles. An alternate plan for the development, which was designed by SOM with P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S, would reduce the number of residential units and add a hotel component.
