On September 19th, 2017, SOM Associate Neil Katz will speak at the Buildings 2.0 Conference hosted by BuiltWorlds. A day-long conference focused on smart building technology, Buildings 2.0 will take place at the SOM-designed UI Labs in Chicago.
On August 24th, 2017, Philip Enquist will participate in the BuiltWorlds Cities Conference at UI Labs in Chicago. Speaking on a panel titled "The Ecology of a City," Enquist will present SOM's recent work on the Detroit East Riverfront Framework Plan.
Metropolis features the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) in an article on the manufacturing facilities of today. SOM worked with UI Labs, a Chicago-based research and commercialization collaborative, on the programming and concept design for DMDII.
The Chicago chapter of the Urban Land Institute has recognized two SOM projects with 2016 Vision Awards, the organization's highest honor. The Chinatown Branch of the Chicago Public Library and UI Labs Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute were both recognized for their contributions to the city.

On November 12, 2015, CoreNet Global announced the 2015 REAL Awards, which honors progressive projects and professionals in the real estate industry. The SOM-designed Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) for UI Labs in Chicago was named Project of the Year.
The Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) honored SOM with two Design Excellence Awards on October 23, 2015. UI Labs Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute in Chicago and China Merchants Tower & Woods Park Master Plan in Shenzhen were both recognized.
The Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute, UI Labs' unprecedented center of digital manufacturing, has opened in Chicago. SOM designed the research and development institute, which currently occupies 64,000 square feet of a 285,000-square-foot existing industrial building on Goose Island.
Three SOM projects have won the 2015 Architizer A+ Awards, a program that recognizes outstanding architecture in more than 90 distinct categories. Winners will be recognized at a formal gala on May 14, 2015.
