SOM will participate in more than 20 events at this year's AIA Conference on Architecture in New York City. The conference, which features approximately 70 educational and networking events, includes seminars, workshops, and a two-day Architecture Expo at the Javits Center.
The April 2018 issue of A+U, a monthly English/Japanese language magazine about architecture and urbanism, features multiple SOM-designed projects and contributions from SOM architects and planners. The issue is titled "San Francisco Urban Transformations."
On January 26th, 2018, SOM Associate Director Meredith Bostwick-Lorenzo Eiroa will speak at the annual meeting of the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U). She will join a panel titled "The Physical Environment as a Key Element in Achieving 21st Century Learning Goals."
CNN Style includes Cayan Tower in Dubai in a roundup of buildings that transformed cities around the world. The form and function of the twisting tower, in which each floor rotates around a cylindrical elevator to create a 90-degree turn, are highlighted.
The Urban Land Institute has selected the University Center at The New School as a winner of the 2017-18 Global Awards for Excellence. Additionally, The Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability at Sandy Ground was shortlisted for the annual awards program.
The Strand Theater has been honored with awards from the Society for Experimental Graphic Design and the California Heritage Council. SOM's renovation of the theater resurrected a century-old movie house to provide a performance space for the American Conservatory Theater.
The University Center at The New School and The Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability at Sandy Ground are finalists for the 2017 Urban Land Institute Global Awards for Excellence. The award winners will be announced in October 2017.
Retrofit magazine spotlights SOM's renovation of the Strand Theater in downtown San Francisco. The project helped resurrect a 100-year-old space into an experimental performance venue for the city's preeminent theater company. SOM Design Director Michael Duncan is quoted.
Three SOM projects are recognized in The Architect's Newspaper's 2016 Best of Design Awards. The Strand took first prize for Building Renovation; the Center for Character & Leadership Development is Building of the Year in the Southwest; and the Kathleen Grimm School earned an honorable mention.
