On November 9th, 2017, Alan Lewis spoke at the Guangzhou International Design Forum in China. The annual event is an opportunity for practitioners to discuss architectural design, sustainable design, and other topics as they relate to the city of Guangzhou.
In its November 2017 issue, Architect Magazine names SOM the number one architectural firm on its Architect 50 list. SOM is the only practice to receive top overall ranking two times since the magazine founded the prestigious list in 2009.
Four SOM projects were honored in the 2017 AIA California Council Design Awards. The United States Courthouse in Los Angeles; the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility Master Plan; India Basin; and the University of California Merced's 2020 Campus Development plan all received awards.
Two SOM-designed projects in Los Angeles—the new United States Courthouse and Sunset | La Cienega Residences—received three honors in the 2017 AIA|LA Design Awards. This year's winners were announced at a ceremony on October 30th.
Multiple representatives from SOM will participate in the 2017 Facades+ Los Angeles conference. The two-day event brings building professionals and researchers together to discuss current practices and innovations in facade design, fabrication, and construction.
The Architect's Newspaper reports on the Facades+ conference scheduled for October 19-20 at the L.A. Hotel Downtown in Los Angeles. José Luis Palacios and Keith Boswell will discuss the SOM-designed United States Courthouse on a panel at the event.
In preparation for the Facades+ conference in Los Angeles, The Architect's Newspaper highlights works by local designers and practices. SOM's Paul Danna, José Luis Palacios, Garth Ramsey, and Keith Boswell are featured, as are Olympia and the new United States Courthouse in Los Angeles.
The new United States Courthouse in Los Angeles received a National Award of Merit in the Design-Build Institute of America's 2017 Design-Build Project/Team Awards. The building has also been nominated for the National Awards of Excellence, which will be announced in November, 2017.
On August 17th, 2017, Luke Leung will speak at Energy Exchange, an annual event hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy as a part of the Federal Energy Management Program. Leung will lead the closing plenary session, speaking on the conference theme of "Connect, Collaborate, Conserve."
