On November 9th, 2017, Alan Lewis spoke at the Guangzhou International Design Forum in China. The annual event is an opportunity for practitioners to discuss architectural design, sustainable design, and other topics as they relate to the city of Guangzhou.
On October 2nd, Thomas Kinzl will speak at the 2017 Conference on Advanced Building Skins in Bern, Switzerland. During his presentation "Parametric Curtain Wall Design," Kinzl will explore recent innovations by SOM in curtain wall design, and the implementation and construction of complex geometries.
On August 17th, 2017, Luke Leung will speak at Energy Exchange, an annual event hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy as a part of the Federal Energy Management Program. Leung will lead the closing plenary session, speaking on the conference theme of "Connect, Collaborate, Conserve."
Curbed includes the SOM-designed Tianjin CTF Finance Centre in an article on the next generation of supertall buildings transforming city skylines across the globe. The 1,739-foot-tall tower in Tianjin, China is due to be completed in 2018.
Urban Land magazine includes Cayan Tower in a survey of ten projects that demonstrate design excellence for the world's hottest regions. Completed in 2013, the SOM-designed tower is distinguished by its twisting shape that shades the interiors and mitigates the effects of strong desert winds.
On April 9th, 2016, SOM Director Eric Tomich will speak at the Glass Performance Days China Conference in Shanghai. Tomich will open this edition of the international industry conference with a talk on the design of SOM's Pearl River Tower in Guangzhou.
The Middle East chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) honored four SOM projects in its 2015 Design Awards, marking the second consecutive year that SOM has won more awards in this program than any other firm. Al Hamra Tower and Cayan Tower were recognized in the built projects category, and Al Ahmadi Cultural Center and Nozul Lusail Marina earned accolades for unbuilt projects.
Two SOM projects have been selected for the 2015 MIPIM Asia Awards, which recognizes innovation and excellence in real estate development. This year’s winners—including the Tianjin CTF Finance Centre and Ayala Triangle Gardens—will each be honored with a bronze, silver, or gold ranking on December 1, 2015, after a voting period open to the MIPIM Asia community.
The Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI) honored 16 SOM structural projects at its annual awards dinner on June 6, 2015. These awards in part reflect the purpose of the SEAOI: to advance and advocate excellence in structural engineering and to aid in safeguarding the public.
