Public Safety Answering Center II has been awarded an AIA New York Chapter Merit Award for Architecture. Located in the Bronx, the 450,000-square-foot emergency call center strengthens New York City's ability to maintain communication in the event of a natural disaster or large-scale emergency. SOM's design features a distinctive serrated facade, made of recycled aluminum, and a wrap-around sculptural berm of wild grasses, both of which are designed to address the facility's security requirements.
The annual AIA New York Design Awards celebrate exceptional design by New York City architects, as well as work in New York City designed by architects from around the world. The winning projects will be showcased in the 2017 Design Awards exhibition at the Center for Architecture, on view from April 21st to June 20th, 2017.
