New Courthouse is a Pleasing Addition to L.A.'s Civic Center

Most people in Downtown Los Angeles will probably never enter the new United States Courthouse by choice... Still, we think the $350 million, 10-story building is a fine addition to the community, with an attractive design that fits with the context of the neighborhood and interacts well with the surrounding streets. The many environmentally sensible elements in the structure also merit praise.


In addition to Roybal-Allard, the U.S. General Services Administration deserves recognition for managing the construction and move-in process... We are also pleased with architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s glass-heavy design, as the building seems to float over a narrow concrete pedestal. Inside, there is a courtyard and a smart use of natural light to cut down on electricity bills.
