American and Chinese government officials gathered on March 5, 2014, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new SOM-designed U.S. Consulate General Complex in Guangzhou, China. Occupying a 7.5-acre lot in the Pearl River New Town district, the complex includes two office buildings, a U.S. Marine Corps residence, a warehouse with service shops, and three entrance pavilions.

The award-winning design features numerous strategies to conserve resources and reduce operating costs, such as green roofs and a stormwater retention system. The project has earned LEED®Silver certification.
