Gunnar Hand, SOM Urban Designer, will take part in an Urban Land Institute Technical Assistance Panel (TAP) that will focus on Leimert Park in southern Los Angeles. Sponsored by the office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, the two-day panel will gather experts from a number of fields to offer objective advice about complex land use, transportation, and real estate issues facing Leimert Park, a residential neighborhood that has been known as a center of African American art, music, and culture since the 1920s.
Consisting of twelve members, the TAP will review existing redevelopment plans, tour the neighborhood, and interview residents, elected officials, community leaders, and local business and property owners. They will seek community-oriented solutions to promote the neighborhood, encourage the growth of new retail markets, redevelop city-owned parking lots, and locate financing options to help reinvigorate stalled transit and pedestrian-oriented development efforts.
