San Francisco, CA: Clark/SOM’s concept has a strong civic presence rooted in classic principles and incorporates state-of-the-art technology and sustainable features. This target LEED® Platinum courthouse uniquely responds to its downtown location. The courthouse’s serrated façade is designed to achieve a north/south orientation that will maximize views while reducing solar heat gain by 47%. The design includes an innovative structural engineering concept that allows the cubic courthouse volume to appear to float over its stone base while being one of the Nation’s safest buildings relating to earthquakes and bomb threats. The plan optimizes the courts program and workflow and, ensures efficient operations and maintenance.

Over the next three to four months, Clark/SOM will be working closely with GSA, the U.S. Courts, and other tenant agencies to confirm program requirements and complete the design concept.

The design concept will undergo a formal review process by GSA’s technical advisory teams and a peer review by members of the architectural community before final approval.
