Gary Haney Elevated to RIBA Fellow Member

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has named SOM Design Partner Gary Haney a 2019 RIBA Fellow Member. The designation reflects Haney’s significant contributions to the profession and his stature as an inspirational RIBA Chartered Member.

Haney’s broad range of commercial, government, and hospitality projects include buildings of great scale and complexity such as Al Hamra Tower in Kuwait City, the BBVA Operations Center in Mexico City, and Public Safety Answering Center II in the Bronx, New York. Haney’s accomplishments in sustainable design include pioneering the use of the Active Modular Phytoremediation System, a green wall system that cleans air in enclosed workplaces. He also designed the LEED® Gold certified U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. The complex incorporates sustainable design elements such as a sun-deflecting brise-soleil and a water reclamation system that simultaneously reduces energy use and emissions while creating a more pleasant workplace environment.

In addition to Haney, seven other RIBA Chartered Members were elevated to Fellow Members. The group represents a range of backgrounds, portfolios, and expertise.
