Denver Union Station has been recognized with the Engineering News-Record (ENR) Mountain States Best Project Award in the Airports/Transit category. The intermodal hub, planned and designed by SOM, opened this past spring. Denver Union Station was submitted for consideration in this awards program by Kiewit Corporation, who served as the contractor/design-builder on the transformative project. Members of the project team will be honored at an awards breakfast on October 30, 2014.
According to the call for entries, the ENR Mountain States Best Projects competition honors “the best construction projects and the companies that designed and built them” Other judging criteria include safety, construction quality and craftsmanship, and design and aesthetic quality.
A regional awards program, the ENR Mountain States Best Projects recognize recently completed projects in Utah, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. A panel comprised of architects, general contractors, and engineers selected winners in each of the twenty project categories.
Denver Union Station is located on the edge of the capital city’s central business district. The project involved transforming 20 acres of former rail yards into an urban transit district that orchestrates light rail, commuter and intercity rail, bicycle and bus routes, and pedestrian pathways into an intuitive intermodal hub.
