The Center for Character & Leadership Development (CCLD) has won a 2017 Excellence in Structural Engineering Award from the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY). The awards program recognizes outstanding achievement and innovation in structural engineering. CCLD was honored in the New Building Category.

An education and research center at the U.S. Air Force Academy, CCLD supports the institution's mission to integrate character and leadership development into all aspects of cadet training. SOM's design reflects a focus on constructability and maximizing material efficiency. The most prominent feature of the building—a 105-foot-tall skylight—consists of a triangulated system of architecturally exposed structural steel plates of varying depths.

CCLD represents an important and symbolic addition to the U.S. Air Force Academy’s historic campus, which SOM designed in 1954. As the first significant building constructed in the Cadet Area since the 1990s, CCLD creates a new icon for the campus. Additionally, the new building serves as a visual counterpoint to the Cadet Chapel, which is recognized as the culminating architectural element of the original campus.
