On Friday, November 17th, SOM Senior Structural Engineer Benton Johnson will take part in an online forum hosted by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). The forum centers on steel and timber systems for residential buildings. Architects, engineers, owners, fabricators, and all construction and steel industry professionals are invited to register for the forum.
The design and engineering of mid- and highrise residential buildings, a significant portion of the contemporary building market, pose constraints not typically found in commercial construction. Structural steel frames have many benefits that can complement residential construction, including prefabrication and speed of construction. Additionally, emerging technologies such as cross-laminated timber offer potential benefits.
AISC and SOM have partnered to study the combination of these materials as they relate to the challenges of residential construction. In the online forum, Johnson will discuss the research and its implications. The event will be broadcast live from the AISC headquarters in Chicago. Viewing instructions will be sent to all attendees following registration.
