Earlier this year, SOM Associate Benton Johnson spoke at the 2016 MassTimber Conference in Portland, Oregon. There, he presented SOM's Timber Tower Research Project that proposes using wood as the primary building material for a 42-story skyscraper. In this video from the event, Johnson discusses the possibilities of composite timber structures, which combine wood and concrete to achieve highly efficient buildings with a reduced carbon footprint.
"The goal of the Timber Tower Research Project was to develop a structural system for tall buildings that uses mass timber as the main structural material," says Johnson. "Most importantly, it needs to be able to compete with concrete and steel."
