SOM Associate Director Aaron May will participate in a panel discussion at the 2017 National Conference of the American Planning Association in New York City. Titled "Detroit's Design Excellence Meets Equity," the panel will include discussion of the design strategies behind the Detroit East Riverfront Framework Plan. Recently unveiled, the SOM-led framework proposes new connections between the East Riverfront and surrounding neighborhoods, expands green space, and makes pedestrian-friendly streetscape improvements to specific areas across the 480-acre site.
Joining May as panelists will be Maurice Cox, Planning Director, City of Detroit; Alexa Bush, Architect, Planning & Development, City of Detroit; Karen Gage, Lead Planner, City of Detroit; and Mark Wallace, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy. The panelists will discuss how the project team worked with Detroit residents to create an accessible, community-focused design for the East Riverfront. Together, the City of Detroit and the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy are spearheading the Detroit East Riverfront Framework Plan.
