The JTI Building: From Triangle to Topography

Sécheron is a park-like business district in Geneva, where numerous prestige buildings overlook the city's namesake lake. The newest office to rise in this lush setting is the headquarters of Japan Tobacco International, set for completion in 2015. A recent animation shows how SOM's design of the JTI Building melds the district's respect for nature with its legacy of stunning architectural expression.

The fly-through particularly illustrates the JTI Building's relationship to Lake Geneva and the Alps. The triangular-plan structure's opposing corners are elevated, which enables a central courtyard to provide unencumbered views and circulation to pedestrians. These shifts in geometry work in tandem with variations in cladding material and courtyard design to give the project a more topographical appearance. The animation ultimately takes viewers into the forthcoming building, revealing that the interior's character also has the quality of soaring landscape.
