On October 13th, 2016, SOM Structural Engineering Partners William F. Baker and Mark Sarkisian presented a lecture at the Utzon Center in Aalborg, Denmark, to coincide with the exhibition opening of Sky's the Limit: The Engineering of Architecture. The event was part of the the Utzon(x) Lecture Series, jointly organized with the Department of Architecture and Media Technology at Aalborg University.
Baker and Sarkisian began with an overview of the firm’s driving principles—to design simple, structurally clear, sustainable buildings—and went on to describe how SOM has pursued these core principles throughout decades of innovation in architecture and engineering. Through attention to scale, form, efficiency, geometry, and research, the firm has designed buildings that are among the most meaningful and innovative architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries. Baker and Sarkisian discussed a range of topics including the contributions of pioneering SOM architects and engineers such as Myron Goldsmith and Fazlur Khan, presented a case study of the Burj Khalifa, and participated in an audience Q&A.
