Preliminary Observations in the Aftermath of the September 19, 2017 Puebla–Morelos Earthquake
In the wake of the devastating Puebla–Morelos earthquake on September 19th, 2017, a team of SOM engineers contributed to post-disaster recovery efforts in Mexico City. Abel Díaz (SEAOSC), Patrick Murren (SEAONC), and Samantha Walker (SEAONC)—three structural engineers based in SOM's San Francisco and Los Angeles offices—traveled to Mexico City shortly after the 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck. The team documented building damage and provided technical support to local structural reconnaissance efforts. Joining the team were Edward Guerra, Associate Director at SOM, and architect Adrián Gracia, Design Director at Cuatro44—both residents of Mexico. This report summarizes the team's observations on the structural damage caused by the earthquake.
