SOM Journal 5 is the fifth issue in a continuing series which highlights conceptual undercurrents being developed at SOM. The Journals present a selection of SOM projects chosen by a jury renowned in the fields of architecture, art, and engineering. This process of review by jury is an endeavor unique to SOM in documenting external criticism of current projects through an unparalleled format for review.
SOM Journal 5 enters new territory with the inception of an Editorial Board that includes the highly regarded architectural voices of Kenneth Frampton, Francesco Dal Co, and Juhani Pallasmaa. The board was assembled to create a broader, more dynamic journal that focuses on issues important not only to SOM but the globalized architectural world as it relates to corporate architecture, environmental concerns, and digital design, as well as reflecting on the important historical past of SOM. The board was also responsible for the selection of jurors, further removing SOM from the criticism of its work.
This year’s jury gathered to discuss SOM’s recent work at the Alvar Aalto’s historical Maison Louis Carré in Bazoches-sur-Guonne, France, on October 11 and 12, 2007.
