Thomas Kerwin

FAIA, Managing Partner

Thomas Kerwin, FAIA, is a managing partner in the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM). As a specialist in the management of large-scale urban projects, he is dedicated to successfully directing complex and innovative projects both globally and locally.

Supervising the execution of multifaceted projects, Mr. Kerwin follows a solution-oriented ethos by selecting the most highly qualified team members to complete all services within the established schedule and budget.  He extends his proficient management approach to client representatives, construction managers, general contractors and special consultants in order to garner their successful contributions to projects.

Presently, Mr. Kerwin is overseeing SOM’s involvement with the Chicago 2016 Committee as coordinating architect for the city’s Olympic bid. He is also working on several major developments in China, including the Nanjing Greenland Financial Center in Nanjing, White Magnolia Plaza in Shanghai and the highly sustainable Pearl River Tower in Guangzhou.

Mr. Kerwin’s commitment to international and local projects has yielded numerous awards and recognition in the industry, including his recent elevation to Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).  His efforts are tangibly expressed in his determination to support dynamic civic initiatives and reach audiences within and beyond the building profession. Mr. Kerwin is the former President of the Chicago Chapter of the AIA and an active member of Chicago’s China Sisters Cities Program.

Mr. Kerwin received a Bachelor of Architecture from Ball State University and a Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
