Window Form Optimization
Project: Ali Al-Sabah Military Academy · Kuwait City, Kuwait · 2010
For this project, BlackBox was asked to redesign the geometry of a sculpted wall surface surrounding a typical array of punched windows that were being propagated across a military campus in the Mideast. The goal of the redesign was to minimize the amount of direct solar radiation passing through the window and into the interior space for each of the four typical solar orientations (north, south, east, and west).
For each solar orientation, the design team was presented with a range of possible geometries that all performed well with respect to the goal of minimizing heat gain. The BlackBox team developed and used a genetic algorithm in order to find these proposed designs, using a number of different software programs including Digital Project, Speos, and Excel, in addition to the custom-written genetic algorithm that linked all the programs together to automate the process of generating the collection of optimal designs.
