Education
Campus planning and educational facility design have a long history at SOM and are a vibrant part of our current practice. Supported by the firm’s depth of resources and multiple in-house disciplines, education planning and design at SOM engages the full range of education clients, including public and private schools, colleges and universities, and research centers. Our portfolio covers virtually every type of master plan and campus facility.
While the demands of every client and project site are different, certain themes resonate across much of SOM’s recent work for educational institutions. Among these are the importance of light in learning spaces, the need for informal areas that support learning beyond the classroom, the critical role of technology, the benefit of planned flexibility for institutions with long time horizons, and the opportunity that sustainability brings to lower operating costs and improve the quality of the campus environment.
SOM’s planning and design solutions emerge from a collaborative process that emphasizes listening, exchange, and exploration. Our planners and designers are skilled at engaging all of an education project’s constituents—students, faculty, administrators, and the community—to develop a comprehensive and cohesive approach that expresses each client’s vision and goals.
