Paul Whitson AIA, Design Director |
Paul Whitson brings a wealth of healthcare design experience to SOM in his role as Health + Science Practice Leader. His continuing interest in sophisticated architectural design defines a balance between the technical and expressive elements of his healthcare projects. Under his direction, the implementation of complicated programs satisfies client needs through the creation of elegant spaces.
Mr. Whitson has spent much of his 18-year architectural career designing for healthcare environments. He has worked on projects varying from critical care units and chemotherapy infusion suites, to research labs and vivaria. Current projects include LIJ/Northshore Katz Women’s Hospital, and an 800-bed replacement hospital in the Middle East.
Thoroughness is a hallmark of his design process. The details in his designs satisfy the demands of infection control, while maintaining a high level of aesthetic integrity. His designs become an integral part of the therapeutic process – patient comfort and provider effectiveness are the top priorities.
The wide variety of institutions for which Mr. Whitson has worked allows him to be comfortable with a diverse clientele. He understands the various and often conflicting priorities of the space planning, engineering, architectural, and administrative staff involved in all organizations. He builds bridges between the various stakeholders so they all feel rewarded and satisfied by the end product.
Through his understanding of the multiple systems that must be integrated into a project, Mr. Whitson leads the design consultant team to ensure that the new installations are well-received in the institutional body. He uses his familiarity and facility with the means of technical production to communicate design ideas to the client in a way that streamlines the process from design to production drawings and construction administration.
