When SOM designers began planning the new Parkland Hospital, they conceived a mixed-use campus that at 92-acres would be neighborhood-sized. Designing at this scale required that sophisticated urban planning principles be applied, and such factors as pedestrian circulation, transit, underground parking, street-level retail, hotel, and even residential uses be included. SOM also provided intelligent long-range planning to accommodate future growth.
