The new Women’s Hospital on the campus of NSLIJ's Long Island Jewish Medical Center will consolidate women’s services, provide spaces for the delivery of healthcare to expectant mothers, create efficient linkages to the Hospital’s main tower and act as centerpiece for the revitalization of this 48-acre campus.
The 290,000 sf building will provide state-of-the-art facilities for diagnostic and treatment services, labor and delivery, ante and postpartum care, C-section operating rooms, and will include a nursery for 60 newborns and 72 new single-bed rooms, offering its patients greater privacy. The new facilities will improve efficiency and provide a high degree of comfort in patient-focused and family-focused care in a soothing and humane environment.
The Women’s Hospital also creates a new front door to the entire Medical Center’s campus, facing the new esplanade and separating itself from the existing LIJ Tower to allow southern light and views of the surrounding landscape. The building’s public spaces are designed to promote clear and logical circulation, delineate appropriate security measures, and present amenities to patients and visitors. Themes of health and vitality are supported in an intimate garden and a natural court intended for small gatherings. The interior is modeled after residential and hotel architecture to bring comfort to patients and families.
The Hospital design allows flexibility for growth. The building infrastructure and all building systems will allocate for future vertical expansion of three additional stories, accommodating 30 medical / surgical beds each, for uses that are to be determined by the client in response to the rapidly changing needs of the healthcare marketplace.
