Ame M. Engelhart
AIA, APA, AICP, Director of SOM Hong Kong
Ame Engelhart is an accomplished architect and urban designer focused on the design of cities, districts, and large, complex architectural projects. Based in Hong Kong since 1993, she has extensive experience in China and Southeast Asia. As the Director of SOM’s Hong Kong office, she is responsible for steering the firm’s overall strategic objectives and growing regional development in ASEAN/Pacific and PRD markets.
With a background in both architecture and urban planning, Engelhart brings the design expertise and ambitions of both disciplines together to develop holistic plans for urban centers and communities. She has collaborated with multi-disciplinary design teams on large-scale mixed-use developments and urban districts across Asia for the last 25 years. These projects include a variety of functional typologies, including transit-oriented development, airports, urban growth, new communities, research, and education.
Engelhart creatively addresses challenges and opportunities that emerge from established and developing cities in Asia. She is dedicated to promoting the fundamental principles of livability and sustainability, and approaches each design project with respect to the unique social, economic, environmental, and geographic conditions inherent in each city and site. She directs high-visibility, forward-facing projects that strategically define or redefine important places, positioning them for enduring growth.
